The role of optimism and self-compassion in predicting students' social well-being

Background and Aim: Social well-being is one of the important dimensions of students' mental health, and several psychological factors can affect social well-being, including optimism and self-compassion as a spiritual component. The present study aimed to investigate the role of optimism and self-compassion in predicting students' social well-being. Methods: This research was descriptive-correlational. The statistical population of the study included students of Islamic Azad University, Birjand Branch, in the second semester of the academic year ۲۰۲۴-۲۰۲۵, from which ۳۵۱ people were selected using a random-cluster sampling method. To collect data, standard questionnaires of life orientation by Scheier & Carver (۱۹۹۴), self-compassion by Neff (۲۰۰۳), and social well-being by Keyes & Shapiro (۲۰۰۴) were used. Data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient and multivariate regression analysis in SPSS-۲۷ software. Findings: The findings showed that optimism (F=۴۸.۵۲, P<۰.۰۱) and self-compassion (F=۵۰.۱۸, P<۰.۰۱) play a significant role in predicting students' social well-being, explaining ۴۵.۸ percent (R²=۰.۴۵۸) and ۵۰.۲ percent (R²=۰.۵۰۲) of its variance, respectively. Standardized regression coefficients showed that both variables have a positive and direct effect on social well-being. Conclusion: These findings emphasize the importance of strengthening optimism and self-compassion among students, and it is suggested that universities should promote the level of these characteristics in students by holding educational workshops, counseling sessions, and support programs and help improve their social well-being.
