Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a light-activated cancer treatment. A photosensitizing drug is administered, and when exposed to specific wavelengths of light, it generates highly reactive oxygen species (ROS) that destroy cancer cells. Breast cancer (BC) is the most common form of cancer among women which rates continue to climb, and conventional treatments like chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery often involve invasive procedures and significant side effects. PDT offers a more targeted and less invasive approach. By activating a drug with light, it selectively destroys cancer cells while minimizing damage to healthy tissue. Nanoparticles (NPs) based PDT has emerged as a promising approach, offering significant advantages over traditional PDT using free photosensitizers (PSs). NPs enhance drug solubility, reduce premature degradation, and improve targeted delivery to cancer cells. This study explores the application of various inorganic and organic NPs types in PDT. Inorganic NPs outperform organic nanomaterials in several key areas, such as stability, size control, and optical properties. Furthermore, metallic and inorganic NPs are more durable than their organic counterparts, exhibiting a slower degradation rate. By leveraging the unique properties of these NPs, researchers aim to develop more effective and less invasive cancer treatments.
