چکیده مقاله:

Premature menopause, or Primary Ovarian Insufficiency (POI), is one of the complex and multifactorial disorders in women's health, characterized by early cessation of menstruation, infertility, reduced bone density, and increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. From the perspective of Iranian traditional medicine, women’s reproductive health depends on the balance of bodily energies and temperaments of vital organs; among these, the liver plays a central role as the organ responsible for blood production, heat moderation, and internal nourishment of the uterus. Classical sources such as Avicenna’s Canon of Medicine and Jurjani’s Zakhireh Kharazmshahi clearly state that liver dystemperament, especially heat and dryness, leads to impaired blood production for menstruation, disruption in uterine nourishment, and ultimately premature cessation of menstruation. In this study, using a comparative review approach and content analysis of classical Persian medical texts alongside modern scientific data, the relationship between correction of liver temperament and the female reproductive cycle was examined. Data were collected and analyzed from traditional sources, articles indexed in PubMed, Scopus, and SID, as well as clinical studies on herbal medicines effective in liver function and fertility. Furthermore, the effects of interventions such as the consumption of herbs with moderate temperament (e.g., chicory, jujube, sekanjabin), adherence to nutritional guidelines, and use of liver detoxification methods on the hypothalamic pituitary ovarian (HPO) axis were evaluated. Findings indicated that liver temperament correction can lead to moderation in sex hormone levels, reduction in FSH index, increased ovarian response, and return of menstruation in cases of amenorrhea. Additionally, evidence suggests that liver temperament regulation through moisture enhancement and elimination of excess heat improves ovarian blood supply and delays the onset of menopause. Consequently, correction of liver temperament, based on the principles of traditional medicine and supported by contemporary scientific evidence, can be proposed as a complementary and effective approach for preventing premature menopause and promoting women's reproductive health.
