چکیده مقاله:

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) demonstrate unique chemical, mechanical, and notably distinct magnetic properties compared to conventional micro- and macro-scale materials, primarily due to their exclusive size effects. As a result, MNPs have attracted significant attention in fields such as biology, medicine, and engineering. More recently, their potential applications in the petroleum industry have emerged, including targeted adsorption, remote sensing, directional transport, and localized heating. For these specialized uses, the dispersion and stability of MNPs in suspension are critical factors. While there have been some reviews on nanotechnology in oil production, a comprehensive review focusing specifically on the role of MNPs in the petroleum sector is still lacking. Therefore, there is a need to summarize recent advances and future prospects in this area. This review aims to provide an overview of MNP applications in the petroleum industry, covering areas such as drilling and completion optimization, magnetic separation, reservoir monitoring and imaging, enhanced oil recovery, heavy oil extraction, flow assurance, and conformance control. Additionally, the physicochemical characteristics of MNPs—including their size, surface properties, and magnetic behavior—are discussed. Finally, the review addresses the key challenges and opportunities related to the use of MNPs in this field.
