Investigating the effect of different management scenarios on groundwater resources of Mahvelat plain in north-east of Iran

In this study, a groundwater flow model (MODFLOW) was employed in order to analyse the aquifer behaviour under different catchment management scenarios. Evaluation was done by quantifying the impacts of all these scenarios on the aquifer storage and average annual water level over the whole catchment. The results showed that there is a statistically significant difference between the means of the monthly aquifer storages of all scenarios and those of calibration period (۲۰۱۵). Although, differences between the median of monthly aquifer storages for scenarios ۱, ۲ and ۷ with those of calibration period (۲۰۱۵) are remarkable. Changes in average annual water level over the whole catchment (m) for scenarios ۱ to ۷ compared to calibration period are ۴.۴۷, -۳.۲۹, ۱.۰۹, ۱.۸۱, ۱.۸۹, ۱.۲۰, and ۴.۸۹ meters, respectively. Considering climate change in the future, this study showed that all scenarios are important works to prevent groundwater depletion caused by overexploitation.
