Investigating the role of generational differences in the perception of social support among the elderly: A systematic review

Introduction: With the increasing elderly population in Iran, understanding social support is vital for the mental health of older adults. Cultural, economic, and social changes have led to generational differences that significantly impact how seniors receive and interpret support. This review examines the role of these differences in understanding social support among older adults. Methodology: This study is based on a systematic review of domestic and international studies from the past ۲۰ years. Data were collected through searches in databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, SID, Magiran, and Google Scholar using relevant keywords. Valid studies were selected while excluding review articles and gray literature. Findings: The analysis indicates that generational differences significantly affect the quality of life and social relationships of older adults. Factors such as education level, income source, and previous occupation are key determinants of the type of social support received. These factors influence family relationships and can enhance feelings of dependency. Cultural and economic changes further affect support patterns, highlighting the need for formal services. Conclusion: Evidence suggests that generational differences weaken support networks for older adults. Effective policymaking requires strengthening intergenerational interactions and developing layered social support systems.
