Polysorbate emulsifier in drug delivery systems for cancer and neurodegenerative diseases: Current status and emerging applications

Polysorbates or Tweens, such as polysorbate ۲۰, polysorbate ۴۰, polysorbate ۶۰, and particularly polysorbate ۸۰, are nonionic surfactants mainly applied in pharmaceutical and food formulations. Polysorbates, particularly polysorbate ۸۰ and polysorbate ۲۰, are mainly applied in the therapy of various neoplastic diseases due to their roles in drug solubilization, nanoparticle formulation, and targeted drug delivery. Their ability to interact with cell membranes and modulate drug transport systems makes them especially valuable in overcoming key challenges in cancer treatment. In the context of neurodegenerative diseases, polysorbates have several emerging and potential applications, mostly due to their ability to enhance drug delivery to the brain. This review focused on the current status and emerging applications of polysorbates in drug delivery systems (DDSs) for cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.
