This study focused on examining the effect of project-work on autonomy of Iranian pre-intermediate EFL learners. To do this, ۷۰ Iranian EFL learners were selected from among language institute of Aseman abad city, Ilam province and they were divided into the experimental and control groups. Each group included ۳۵ learners. The participants of the both groups were required to provide answer to a questionnaire of autonomy as the research pre-test. The material that was employed for the purpose of the study was the course book of American Family and Friends ۵. After presenting all the necessary principles, steps and procedures about project-work, the participants of the experimental group were divided into seven groups of five learners. some units of the mentioned book were taught to them utilizing the project-based learning method. During the project, the learners' task was to study the presented materials, acquire related information, produce the project and then present it in front of their friends in the classroom. In other side, the participants of the control group were taught utilizing the course textbook, through the previously used traditional methods. After six weeks of instruction, the learner autonomy questionnaire was administered to the participants of both groups as the research post-test. The obtained data were analyzed using the appropriate statistical methods such as the analysis of two- variable variance. The results of the study indicated that project-work have a positive and significant effect on autonomy level of the participants. The results of the study provide valuable implications for EFL teachers and learners.
