Investigating and studying social and political conflicts and violence With combined methods

The study of social and political conflict and violence has expanded in recent decades with the rise of mixed methods research MMR across the social sciences. This article examines how methods can best be combined in studies of violence and conflict, reviews examples of previous work, and offers directions for future research. I discuss the benefits of MMR for understanding the structures, drivers, and processes of violence. Conducting mixed methods research has implications for a wide range of policy and academic audiences. MMR can improve the fit of theories and empirical results to the complexities of social reality and enhance understanding and cognition of the causes, outcomes, and possible solutions to violence and conflict.
