Effect of Pearlite and Alloying Elements on The HIC Corrosion and Failure Analysis of API ۵L X۶۰ Steel

Transporting corrosive fluids in the oil and gas industry typically necessitates the use of specialized refined steel pipes known as clean steel. These pipes are customized to withstand the corrosive effects of fluids containing hydrogen sulfide (H۲S) gas, carbon dioxide, and moisture, which can result in the souring of oil and subsequent corrosion issues. The presence of hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC), fractures, and hydrogen blisters in the steel poses a threat to the structural integrity of the pipeline. In the realm of oil transportation, API pipes are favored for their proven compatibility and performance. The current study delves into API ۵L X۶۰ TMCP (Thermo-mechanical control process) pipes, specifically chosen for their appropriateness in experimental and evaluative investigations. The chemical composition of these API ۵L X۶۰ TMCP pipes aligns with acceptable limits. The primary objective is to evaluate how the chemical composition and microstructure of the pipe material influence its resistance to corrosion. Consequently, a series of HIC tests were carried out on more than three hundred samples obtained from different heat numbers. The outcomes demonstrated a significant association between the rise in pearlite content and the material's vulnerability to corrosion. The research pinpointed a specific range of chemical composition and pearlite content that effectively shields against HIC. These discoveries play a crucial role in fortifying steel pipelines against hydrogen-related flaws, thereby enhancing their durability and dependability in challenging environments
