The Future of Project Management with the Emergence of Generative Artificial Intelligence: A Review of Contemporary Developments

Project management has seen deep transformations within recent years, triggered by advancements in modern technology, among which generative artificial intelligence has been the spotlight. This article, adopting a review-based approach, analytically examines generative artificial intelligence capacities, applications, and implications in project management. While analytical tools and decision support systems primarily looked at existing data in the past, generative artificial intelligence has allowed project managers new horizons to explore in creating content, solutions, and future scenarios. Alongside defining and discussing the fundamental meaning of project management, this paper analyzes the emerging challenges and needs of project management in the digital era and through this lens, investigates the applications of generative artificial intelligence throughout the project life cycle. It emerged from this systematic review that generative artificial intelligence could be significantly involved with schedule generation, drafting progress reports, risk forecasting, and communication document generation. Further, this would boost decision quality in project management by increasing accuracy, saving time, and promoting team collaboration. This article is intended to fill the existing gap in the scientific literature regarding the specific and unique role of generative artificial intelligence in project management and can serve as a foundation for future research and strategic decision-making in organizations.
