Protective coatings for concrete surfaces are essential in preventing the penetration of aggressive agents such as carbon dioxide (CO۲), which can lead to reinforcement corrosion and structural degradation. This study focuses on formulating a water-based anti-carbonation coating following British Standard EN ۱۰۶۲-۱. Key performance parameters, including CO۲ permeability, water vapor transmission, liquid water permeability, and crack-bridging ability, were evaluated. The study also considered durability against weathering, adhesion, and fungal resistance. To optimize performance, coatings were formulated with varying pigment volume concentrations (PVCs) using an acrylic resin with high adhesion and water resistance. Results demonstrated that a medium PVC formulation with a ۲۰۰ μm dry film thickness achieved the best balance between low CO۲ permeability around ۰.۳ g/m² day and adequate water vapor transmission which is ۰.۱۶ g/m² day. These findings contribute to the development of effective protective coatings, enhancing the durability of reinforced concrete structures exposed to environmental conditions. Furthermore, based on the empirical findings this product demonstrates potential applicability for exterior masonry or concrete substrates.
