Breast cancer (BC) remains one of the most prevalent malignancies affecting women worldwide, significantly impacting their physical and psychological well-being. Recent studies have highlighted the association between breast cancer and the development of upper crossed syndrome (UCS), a postural imbalance characterized by tightness in the upper trapezius and pectoral muscles, coupled with weakness in the deep neck flexors and lower scapular stabilizers. This review synthesizes findings from the past decade, illustrating how the physical and emotional burdens of breast cancer can exacerbate musculoskeletal issues, particularly UCS. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the interplay between breast cancer and UCS, emphasizing the need for integrated management strategies that address both oncological treatment and musculoskeletal health. Patients undergoing surgical interventions, such as mastectomy or lumpectomy, often experience altered biomechanics due to changes in shoulder mobility and muscle function, contributing to the prevalence of UCS. Additionally, treatments including chemotherapy and radiotherapy can lead to fatigue and muscle atrophy, further complicating the postural dynamics. Psychological factors, including anxiety and depression associated with a cancer diagnosis, may also play a role in exacerbating postural dysfunctions. Therapeutic approaches focusing on physical rehabilitation, including targeted exercises and postural training, have shown promise in alleviating symptoms of UCS in breast cancer survivors. Future research should aim to explore the effectiveness of specific rehabilitation protocols in improving quality of life for breast cancer patients affected by UCS.
