چکیده مقاله:
The release of nuclear waste from Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has generated significant environmental and economic apprehensions within the surrounding area. This action could have negative impacts on marine ecosystems and related industries, especially China's fisheries industry. Previous studies have mainly focused on the environmental consequences of such discharges, but a comprehensive examination of the economic impacts on China's fisheries sector has received less attention. This article aims to fill this research gap by assessing the impacts of Japan's nuclear waste discharge on China's fisheries industry. A combination of the Difference in Difference (DiD) method is used to achieve this goal. The paper overview of the nuclear waste disposal methods globally and the potential impacts on marine ecosystems and fisheries. It then discusses the geographical and economic importance of the fisheries sector to China, highlighting its role in food security, employment, exports, and technological development. This study centers on analyzing the cross-border implications, the need for international collaboration, and the risk assessment and monitoring systems necessary to address the impacts of Japan's nuclear waste discharge on China's vital fisheries industry. The study also proposes the development of a robust DiD model to quantify the complex relationships between nuclear waste and fisheries outcomes. Furthermore, the two-difference DiD approach is identified as a powerful tool to rigorously assess the causal impacts. The article shows by discussing the recent agreement between China and Japan on independent monitoring and gradual resumption of seafood trade. The research shows the importance of comprehensive, science-based, and cooperative approaches to address environmental challenges that transcend national borders. The key results show the significant transboundary concerns, the need for robust monitoring and risk assessment frameworks, and the importance of international cooperation to mitigate the environmental and economic impacts of Japan's nuclear waste discharge on China's vital fisheries industry.
