Cognitive-Based Translation Process Research (Think-Aloud Protocol: Methodological Considerations)

Recently the focus in Translation Studies (TS) has been the mental and the cognitive operations of the translation process, which echoes epistemological concerns in nature raised as to the actual object of translation theory. Translators and translation scholars have always been interested in the process in question. Although the contribution of psychology in the field of translation is limited, it can be helpful in the mental process of translation. In this regard, the Think Aloud Protocol is considerable in this field. So, this article deals with the aim and purpose of Think Aloud Protocol analysis in translation studies, its types, as well as its merits and limitations in the field of problem-solving and decision-making (procedural knowledge), and some tentative results in Germany. Finally, it concludes that despite some challenges, it can be of great importance, and it is open to further research in the mentioned field, regarding the opposition between hermeneutic and sociological approaches.
