Predicting Domestic Violence Based on Cognitive Self-assessment, Sexual Assertiveness, and Perceived Social Support among Infertile Women: A Predictive Correlational Study

Background & aim: Infertility increases the risk of violence against women, necessitating an understanding of predictors of such violence. This study aimed to predict domestic violence in infertile women based on cognitive self-assessment, sexual assertiveness, and perceived social support.Methods: This predictive correlational study involved ۲۴۸ infertile women in Urmia, Northwest Iran over six months  from September ۲۰۲۲ to February ۲۰۲۳). Participants were selected through convenience sampling based on inclusion criteria. Data were collected via self-report questionnaires assessing spousal abuse, self-efficacy, self-esteem, sexual assertiveness, and perceived social support. Analysis was conducted using SPSS software (V. ۲۰۲۰), employing Pearson correlation test and multivariate regression.Results: The prevalence of domestic violence among infertile women was ۳۶.۰۶% ± ۱۰.۵۱%. A significant negative correlation was found between predictor variables and domestic violence including self-efficacy (P < ۰.۰۱), self-esteem (P < ۰.۰۱), sexual assertiveness (P < ۰.۰۱), family support (P < ۰.۰۱), friends support (P = ۰.۰۴۱), significant others support (P = ۰.۰۲۴), and total perceived social support (P < ۰.۰۱). The adjusted coefficient of determination was ۰.۶۰۷, indicating that these predictors accounted for about ۶۰% of the variance in domestic violence, with self-esteem showing the highest regression coefficient (beta = ۰.۶۲۳).Conclusion: Self-esteem, self-efficacy, sexual assertiveness, and strong family support are crucial in predicting risk of violence among infertile women. Enhancing these factors can mitigate violence and improve infertile women’s well-being.
