Application of Photo-Fenton System (UV/ H۲O۲/ Fe۲+) for Efficient Decolorization of Azo-Dye Acid Yellow ۱۷ in Aqueous Solution

Herein we report, the robustness of UV/H۲O۲/Fe۲+ system for efficient decolorization of azo-dye Acid Yellow (AY۱۷) solution. It has been found that ۸۸% AY۱۷ decolorized by UV/H۲O۲/Fe۲+ system in ۲۵ minutes under the following optimized conditions; [dye] = ۰.۱۴ mM, [H۲O۲] =۱.۰ mM, [Fe۲+ ] = ۰.۰۹ mM, stirring velocity =۱۰۰ rpm, and pH = ۳.۰. The decolorization of AY۱۷ by UV/H۲O۲/Fe۲+ system exhibits second-order reaction kinetics. Thermodynamic parameters, activation enthalpy, rH*, (۱۳.۷۶ kJ/mol۱), and entropy rS*, (۰.۰۳۴۶۸۶ J/K) of the dye decolorization were also determined. It was ascertained that electrolytes such as HCO۳−, CO۳۲−, Cl−, and SO۴۲− decrease the decolorization efficiency by scavenging the hydroxyl radical generation in the dye solution. Finally, the AY۱۷ decolorization in the tape water sample by UV/H۲O۲/Fe۲+ system was also examined.
