Liquid-Liquid Extraction of Gallium from Jajarm Bayer Process Liquor Using Kelex ۱۰۰

The solvent extraction of gallium from a concentrated Jajarm Bayer process liquor containing ۱۶۴.۹۰ g/l of Na۲O, ۸۶.۷۰ g/l of Al۲O۳ and ۱۰۶.۰۲ ppm of gallium was investigated using ۱۰ vol.% Kelex۱۰۰, a ۷-alkyl substituted-۸ hydroxyquinoline as an extractant, ۱۰ vol.% etanol as a modifier and kerosene as a diluent. At (Vo :Va = ۱.۰:۱.۰) organic to aqueous phase ratio and at room temperature, ۹۳.۳۹% of gallium was recovered in ۶۰ minutes. Back extraction studies of the loaded organic phase were carried out using hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide. Scrubbing of aluminium co-extracted into the organic phase was carried out with ۵.۰ M HCl and subsequently stripping of gallium was carried out with ۱.۵ M HCl. The final strip liquor was found to contain ۴۹۰ ppm of gallium along with ۱۴۱.۷۳ ppm of aluminium.
