Human-Centered Explainable AI: An Overview of Current Approaches and Challenges

As artificial intelligence (AI) systems are increasingly adopted in high-stakes domains such as healthcare, finance, and criminal justice, their opaque and complex decision-making processes present significant challenges for user trust, accountability, and transparency. Human-Centered Explainable AI (HCXAI) aims to address these challenges by focusing not only on algorithmic transparency but also on how explanations are designed, delivered, and understood by human users. This overview articulates the progress and the persistent gaps in building AI systems that are not only accurate but also interpretable, usable, and trustworthy.
