Epistemic Democracy and Political Freedom in Islamic Thought :A Comparative Study of Martyr Morteza Motahhari and Ayatollah Taleqani

This article investigates the intersection of epistemic democracy and the concept of political freedom within Islamic intellectual traditions, focusing on the views of Martyr Morteza Motahhari and Ayatollah Mahmoud Taleqani. Epistemic democracy, which emphasizes the cognitive quality and collective rationality of democratic decision-making, has gained traction among political theorists in recent years. Through a conceptual and comparative analysis, this research demonstrates how foundational Islamic concepts—rationality, public participation, and political ethics—mirror the core principles of epistemic democracy. The study concludes that Islamic rationalist and participatory traditions offer substantial potential for developing an indigenous epistemic theory of political democracy.
