Modern Wound Dressings and their Use

Wounds are a global challenge, imposing significant financial burdens on healthcare systems annually. It is estimated that ۱-۲% of the population in developed countries will experience chronic wounds in their lifetime. Additionally, the global prevalence of chronic wounds ranges from ۱.۵۱ to ۲.۲۱ per ۱,۰۰۰ individuals. These numbers are expected to rise with the aging global population. In Iran, the prevalence of chronic wounds is reported to be between ۳.۶% and ۴۵.۷%, with diabetic foot ulcers affecting ۱.۸% of the population. Recent advancements in medical care have led to the development of smart dressings for various types of wounds. Choosing the appropriate dressing for each specific wound type helps reduce hospitalization costs, accelerate treatment, and promote faster healing. The goal of this study is to provide comprehensive information on different types of wound dressings, enabling the reader to gain a foundational knowledge and apply it to the design of wound dressings. Moreover, it aims to establish a connection between wound types and the selection of the appropriate dressing.
