The Effect of Phenytoin Ointment on Healing Pressure Ulcers

Background: The skin is the largest organ of the human body, and in today's society, the health of this organ is of great importance. Wound healing is a significant healthcare problem in today’s medical Introduction: Pressure ulcers are a significant health problem worldwide. they also result in longer hospital stays and increase the cost of health care. One of the methods of healing pressure ulcers is the use of phenytoin ointment. Phenytoin ointment with increase in the proliferation of fibroblasts, increased deposition collagen heals wounds. Material and methods: In this review study conducted in ۲۰۲۴, the study population included articles that investigated the effectiveness of phenytoin ointment in wound healing. A search of articles from Google Scholar, Pubmed, Scopus, SID. was conducted during one month (August ۱۰ to September ۱۰). In this search, words and phrases such as wound, phenytoin ointment, wound repair and diabetes were used in the range of the year after ۲۰۱۵ and nearly ۶۳ articles were selected, which were reduced to ۲۵ articles after careful monitoring and study. Results: Results We identified ۱۷ human studies and eight mouse studies. The efficacy of phenytoin is also compared with other wound care agents, including tretinoin, silver sulfadiazine, honey, dexamethasone. Conclusion: This review illustrated the significant effects and rare adverse events of topical phenytoin on wound healing.
