This work reports the efficient synthesis of xanthenes using polyethylene and graphene oxide nanocomposite. Nanocomposite was constructed using modified polyethylene and diethylenetriamine functionalized graphene oxide followed by its modification with ۲-aminopyrimidine and activation with methane sulfonic acid. The nanocomposite was then characterized using XRD, FTIR, FESEM, EDAX, and TGA techniques. Xanthenes, were prepared from ۲-naphthol, dimedone and aldehydes via a one-pot multicomponent reaction in solvent-free media. The procedure offers several advantages including the no-solvent process, high yield, no by-products, short reaction time, and easy work-up. The nanocomposite can be recovered and reused for many times. The waste polyethylene can be also used for the preparation of nanocomposite, further benefiting the environment.
