The increasing complexity and rapid urbanization of cities worldwide have highlighted the necessity for efficient and effective urban management systems. Traditional urban governance methods, characterized by fragmented decision-making processes, limited data integration, and manual administration, have proven inadequate in addressing contemporary urban challenges. Consequently, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have emerged as transformative tools in urban management, enabling the integration, analysis, and visualization of spatial and non-spatial data for informed decision-making and efficient resource management. This paper critically evaluates the implementation and effectiveness of GIS technology as a core component of urban management information systems in Tabriz City, a significant urban center in northwestern Iran. Tabriz represents an exemplary case due to its historical significance, dense population, and rapid infrastructural expansion. The research specifically investigates GIS applications across essential sectors including urban planning, infrastructure management, transportation systems, and environmental monitoring. Through an extensive descriptive-analytical approach incorporating expert interviews, secondary data analysis, and comparative case studies, the research assesses the extent to which GIS has influenced municipal planning and operations in Tabriz. Findings indicate that the introduction of GIS has substantially improved municipal management capabilities, fostering enhanced transparency in urban planning and more efficient infrastructure maintenance. GIS has effectively optimized transportation management through traffic modeling and route planning, reducing congestion and improving public transport efficiency. Furthermore, significant advancements in environmental monitoring have been observed, with GIS enabling precise mapping of pollution and management of urban green spaces. Despite these advancements, significant challenges remain, including limitations in technical expertise, inconsistencies in data integration standards, and bureaucratic and policy-related barriers. Addressing these challenges through targeted capacity-building, standardization of data practices, and policy reforms is crucial for the further integration and optimization of GIS in urban governance. Overall, GIS technology holds considerable promise for enhancing urban management efficacy, sustainable growth, and quality of life within Tabriz City.
