Effect of an educational program based on a standardized handoff communication model of I Pass Baton to nurses in the process of shift Handoff on patient safety culture: A quasi-experimental study

Patient safety culture significantly impacts patient safety in healthcare settings. This study aimed to assess the effect of educating nurses on the I Pass Baton (IPB) communication model on patient safety culture. A quasi-experimental study was conducted on ۴۰ eligible nurses in the cardiac care units (CCUs). Data was collected using a demographic information sheet and a patient safety culture questionnaire. The intervention group received training on the communication model through an educational video and a face-to-face session. A communication model chart was provided to the intervention group, and hand-off practices were implemented for two weeks. The intervention group completed the patient safety culture questionnaire post-intervention, while the control group only completed the questionnaire at the beginning and end of the study. After the intervention, the intervention group’s average patient safety culture score was ۱۴۴.۸۵ (standard deviation [SD]=۱۱.۸۰), while the control group scored ۱۳۳.۱۰ (SD=۱۳.۵۷). The intervention group demonstrated a significant increase in patient safety culture compared to the control group (P=۰.۰۰۶). Within the intervention group, there was a substantial improvement in patient safety culture scores post-intervention compared to pre-intervention (P<۰.۰۰۱). Following the intervention, adjustments were made using covariance due to variations in nurses’ work experiences. After the two-week intervention, the intervention group displayed significant differences in specific dimensions compared to the control group: a general understanding of patient safety (P=۰.۰۰۲), communication and feedback regarding errors (P=۰.۰۳۹), and management support for patient safety (P=۰.۰۰۲). The findings suggest that educating nurses on a standardized communication model during hand-off procedures can enhance patient safety culture within nursing teams.
