چکیده :
Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Remains of the Day is a profound novel that
intricately weaves themes of memory and trauma through the
perspective of Stevens, an English butler. Set against the
backdrop of post-war England, the novel reflects on personal and
historical loss, as well as the emotional toll of servitude and blind
loyalty. The narrative, told through Stevens’ first-person
perspective, allows readers to witness his internal conflicts,
regrets, and attempts to reconcile his past choices with his present
reality. As he embarks on a journey to visit Miss Kenton, a former
housekeeper with whom he shared an unspoken bond, his
reflections offer insight into the ways memory is shaped by
emotions, self-deception, and the passage of time
Memory plays a crucial role in the novel, not only in constructing Stevens’ self-perception but also in revealing his deep-seated reluctance to confront painful truths. His recollections of his years of service at Darlington Hall are often marked by an idealized view of his professional duty, which serves as a coping mechanism for his personal losses. However, as the novel progresses, cracks begin to emerge in his carefully curated narrative, hinting at the emotional repression and self-denial that underlie his devotion to his role. Ishiguro masterfully employs an unreliable narrator, subtly allowing readers to discern the gaps and contradictions in Stevens’ account, thereby emphasizing the complexities of memory and trauma.
