چکیده مقاله:

Background and Objectives: Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are long-acting, reversible contraceptive methods that are effective and safe for preventing unplanned pregnancies. However, a number of studies have shown a decrease in the likelihood of fertility after their use. Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after ۱۲ months of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse. In this study, the effect of using an IUD on fertility was investigated. Material and methods: The search was conducted in some databases, including Google Scholar, Web of Science, PubMed, SID and Scopus. The review specifically targeted articles and documents published from ۲۰۰۵ to ۲۰۲۳. Result: Most women, regardless of the type of IUD, regained fertility within ۱۲ months of IUD removal, with no significant difference between copper and hormonal IUDs. However, this depends on a number of factors Such as: Duration of Use, Age and Age-Related Variations, Race, Previous Pregnancies, Mycoplasma genitallium infection and history of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). Older women (women over ۳۵, especially those over ۴۰) or those with prolonged use of IUDs (over ۵-۶ years) exhibited slightly lower pregnancy rates compared to younger women or those with shorter usage. Conclusion: The findings demonstrate that intrauterine devices (copper and hormonal) are safe and effective contraceptive methods with minimal impact on long-term fertility and fertility typically returns within a year after removal. However, older age and prolonged use of an IUD might slightly lower fertility rates. Keywords: Fertility, Intrauterine device, IUD, LNG-IUD, Copper IUD, pregnancy rate
