Oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance between antioxidant capacity and the production of pro-oxidants such as reactive oxygen species (ROS) and Nitrogen oxide species (NOS). The overproduction of ROS is an important inducer of chronic inflammatory responses which can trigger cells into pathologies. Elevated ROS initiates mitochondrial dysfunction and imbalance in the hormonal function of women. Therefore, imbalance between excess of ROS and lack of antioxidants could negatively affect female fertility. Any agent or compound that could prevent the oxidation of a suitable substrate even at low concentrations is referred to as an antioxidant. antioxidants in nanoparticle form have been suggested as an original way to enhance efficacy and for the targeted delivery and controlled release and minimize side effects. In this review article, two examples of antioxidant nanoparticles are discussed: one is honokiol nanoparticles and the other is selenium nanoparticles. honokiol could effectively attenuate both renal and testicular damage induced by cisplatin. honokiol into liposome-based nanoparticles and gave intraperitoneally to mice for consecutive ۶ weeks. In the nanoHNK treatment group, the testicular gene profile was restored and was similar to control and nanoHNK groups with minor differences. Also in another experiment, SeNPs attenuated testicular injury in toxin exposed male mice due to its role in increasing the capacity of scavenging free radicals and diminishing the burden of ROS, thereby protecting spermatozoa and testis from lipid peroxidation and apoptosis. the SeNPs were embedded in nanotubes consisting of polysaccharide.
