The population has grown in metropolitan areas of all sizes but most strongly in larger ones. Large metropolitan areas with over ۱ million inhabitants grew half a percentage point faster per year than smaller metropolitan areas and have increased by over ۴۰۰ million new inhabitants since ۲۰۰۰. The fastest growth occurred in metropolitan areas with populations above ۵ million. Due to the growth of smaller metropolitan areas, the number of metropolitan areas with more than ۵ million inhabitants doubled in just ۲۵ years. At present, the application of green ecological concepts in the urban design process in metropolises has been very deep, and with the rapid development of green ecological structures, the effective combination of architectural, economic, environmental, furthermore other factors during urban design is ensuring the foundation of primary architectural functions, improving the comfort and environmental protection and connectivity, creating a healthy environment for citizens to socialize and also applying the green ecological concept to large metropolises. Green infrastructure within parks, gardens, streams, rivers, street trees, and micro green spaces can be combined and blended with the grey infrastructure of streets and buildings in ways that add value and provide tangible benefits to the neighborhood. This article introduces the roles and impacts of these ecological structures on urban zones.
