The role of parametric thinking in architectural design

Parametric architecture is a process based on algorithmic thinking in which a set of parameters and rules together define and clarify the relationships between the “design goal” and the “design outcome.” Parametric design is a design paradigm in which the relationships between elements determine the reproduction of complex geometry and forms. The word parametric comes from the topic of “parametric equations” in mathematics and refers to the use of specific parameters and variables that can be changed to modify the result of a system or equation. Parametric design is not a new idea and has long been a part of architecture and design. Attention to changing governing forces such as climate, orientation, culture, and user has always been part of the design process.
