Effect of Electric Current on the Properties of Solid State Joining of Pure Titanium Manufactured by RBW

Today, among welding methods, special attention has been paid to solid-state methods, one of which is Resistance Butt Welding (RBW). The RBW method is considered as one of the prominent methods in creating a successful joining of alloys, especially non-ferrous alloys. This study aims to examine the impact of welding current on the characteristics of joining during the process of RBW of pure titanium. After preparation, pure titanium bars were welded in four different currents at a constant pressure of ۱۵ MPa, and microstructural examination, hardness testing, and strength analysis were performed on them. The microstructure analysis revealed the compression of grains and the potential presence of titanium-copper (Ti۲Cu) intermetallic compound. The presence of the Ti۲Cu phase was observed in the simulation results. Moreover, successful joints were achieved at welding currents of ۳۷۰۰ and ۴۱۰۰ amps. The examination of hardness profiles indicated that the weld zone exhibited higher hardness and in the R۴۱۰۰ sample, in the welded section, reported a hardness of ۱۹۵ HV, which was the highest hardness value recorded. The strength was recorded as ۲۲۵ MPa in the R۴۱۰۰ sample and ۲۱۵ MPa in the pure titanium. The tensile test results also showed that with the increase of welding current at constant pressure in the R۴۱۰۰ sample, the strength is about ۶% higher than the base metal and about ۱۸% higher than the connection made at ۳۷۰۰ amps (R۳۷۰۰ sample). Finally, this method is proposed as a suitable method to create a joint for pure titanium.
