Chromatography in Biotechnology

Chromatography is the most imperative unit process for downstream bio-processing. A key aspect of downstream processing is the analytical testing that is performed to ensure product quality. The majority of analytical testing methods are very time consuming, leading to delay in batch release. Recent developments in Liquid Chromatography and Mass Spectroscopy can significantly decrease these testing times. The advanced knowledge of proteins has helped the development of the chromatographic methods which became very useful tools for the study of protein structure and also purification. The biochromatography is indeed a multidisciplinary field, involving the expertise development in: 1.Polymer chemistry, for development of column packing materials. 2.Mechanical designing of the columns. 3.Development of software for data handling. 4.Detection systems with optics, lasers etc.
