Since English is the medium of communication globally, it is now more important than ever to teach it effectively to EFL learners, particularly in the learning of vocabulary, which is the basis of overall language proficiency. In the present study, the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on learning English vocabulary of high school EFL learners was explored considering supplementing the limitations of traditional approaches, i.e., memorization through rote with little interaction. In a quantitative quasi-experimental design framework, 30 Iranian female high school students from Zahedan were purposively chosen and were allocated to experimental and control groups. Experimental group students learned vocabulary through AI-based learning materials such as computerized feedback processes and interactive chatbots, while the control group learned the same through conventional methodologies. Both groups were given a pre- and post-intervention test on a TOEFL-based vocabulary test, and data were analyzed using SPSS. Results showed significantly improved vocabulary score in the experimental group compared to the control group (p =.013), suggesting that AI-supported learning could enable more engaging, personalized, and student-focused learning environments conducive to more effective vocabulary learning in EFL settings. This discovery suggests that AI might be an excellent supplement—perhaps even a replacement for—traditional high school vocabulary.
