چکیده مقاله:

Objective: Research indicates that certain antiepileptic drugs induce oxidative stress. Ferulic acid (FA), a phenolic compound, possesses antioxidant and neuroprotective properties. This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic potential of FA in a maximal electroshock-induced epilepsy model in mice. Methods: Sixty male mice were divided into six groups. Pre-treatment with FA (۲۰ and ۸۰ mg/kg/day) was administered intraperitoneally (i.p) one week prior to maximal electroshock (MES)-induced seizures. Motor activity was assessed using the grip strength test. Oxidative stress was evaluated by measuring its markers, including nitric oxide (NO) and carbonyl protein (CP), in the hippocampus. Results: FA administration at both doses significantly reduced the duration of hind limb extension (HLE) compared to the control group. Additionally, FA suppressed the MES-induced increase in hippocampal NO and CP levels. Motor activity did not show any significant differences among the groups. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that FA pre-treatment can protect against MES-induced epilepsy in mice by modulating oxidative stress factors in the hippocampus.
