چکیده مقاله:

Agarwood, known for its fragrant aroma, is considered as one of the costliest trees. This aroma is acquired through an expensive process involving injecting microbes or harming the tree. The agarwood tree, which is around fifteen years old, has thrived in a former coal mining region in Sawahlunto, West Sumatra province, Indonesia. This specific tree emits a fragrant aroma without requiring any injection process. Environmental characteristics seemed to influence the metabolic system during the growth of agarwood. In this study, the compounds in the agarwood grown in the former coal mining in Sawah Lunto were characterized using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The soil portrait was also analyzed using X-ray spectroscopy. Moreover, the application of extracts from agarwood has been tested in vitro for its antibacterial ability. As a result, the soil at the research location contained several elements, including AI (۲.۸۱%), Si (۱۱.۷۹%), S (۰.۱۶%), K (۰.۹۹%), Ca (۰.۷۳%), Ti (۰.۳۱%), Mn (۰.۰۸%), Fe (۴.۵۷%), Ba (۰.۱۱%), and Ta (۰.۱۱%). The analysis results revealed that the compounds in agarwood might be caused by environmental stress due to the high Fe. In addition, the secondary metabolites of agarwood that derived from the sapwood of agarwood trees were identified as ۱,۲-dihydro-۸-hydroxylinalool and ۹,۱۰-dihydrodeoxynivalenol, which means it is the specific compounds of agarwood with particular high amount concentration. Furthermore, the extracted resin possesses antibacterial properties, as proven by its ability to combat Escherichia coli bacteria with strong activity.
