چکیده مقاله:

Introduction: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent endocrine disorder among women of reproductive age, often leading to infertility due to anovulation. Despite its widespread occurrence, data on the community-level prevalence of PCOS remains limited. This study aims to bridge this gap by investigating the prevalence of PCOS among women aged ۱۵ to ۴۵ in Hamadan city. Methods and Materials: Conducted in ۱۴۰۰, this descriptive, population-based study involved ۱۲۶۲ women aged ۱۵ to ۴۵ who visited Fatemieh Women's Teaching Hospital. Diagnoses were made based on medical history and clinical symptoms of oligomenorrhea and hyperandrogenism (hirsutism, acne, and male pattern hair loss). Gynecologists evaluated and recorded these cases in the women's medical files. Data were analyzed using chi-square tests with a significance level of ۰.۰۵ (P-value < ۰.۰۵) via SPSS version ۱۶. Results: A total of ۱۲۶۲ records were reviewed, with ۴۴۶ women diagnosed with PCOS and ۸۱۶ considered healthy controls. Among the PCOS cases, ۳۶۶ (۸۲.۱۰%) had hirsutism, ۲۵۲ (۵۶.۵۰%) had irregular menstruation, and ۱۷۷ exhibited both symptoms. The mean age for PCOS patients was ۳۱.۴۰ years compared to ۳۲.۳۰ years for the control group. Menstrual irregularity, BMI, and serum testosterone levels were higher in the PCOS group (P < ۰.۰۵). Infertility (P < ۰.۰۰۱), hyperlipidemia (P = ۰.۰۱۲), and obesity (P < ۰.۰۰۱) were significantly more prevalent in the PCOS group. Conclusion and discussion: The significant prevalence of PCOS in Hamadan underscores its impact on women's reproductive health. This calls for comprehensive strategies by health authorities to raise awareness, improve diagnosis, and manage PCOS effectively to alleviate its burden on Iranian women.
