In the contemporary landscape, sustainability has emerged as a critical priority within higher education. Universities, as pivotal hubs for knowledge and scientific advancement, are essential in fostering a circular economy and promoting sustainable development. The circular economy emphasizes principles such as reduction, reuse, and recycling to mitigate environmental impacts and enhance resource efficiency. Digitalization is increasingly recognized as a vital tool for implementing circular economy models in academic settings. This research aims to explore the current state and challenges associated with circular economy practices in universities, alongside the role of digital transformation in facilitating these initiatives. The methodology employed includes a comprehensive literature review, empirical data analysis, and case studies of universities that have successfully integrated circular economy principles with digital technologies. Findings reveal that universities encounter significant challenges, including substantial carbon emissions and high waste production. Additional barriers include financial constraints, insufficient supportive policies, and cultural resistance to change. However, digital transformation is identified as a crucial enabler in overcoming these obstacles. Technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence can optimize resource lifecycle management and waste reduction. Moreover, designing sustainable buildings and creating green learning environments are effective strategies to advance circular economy goals. The research indicates that adopting circular economy practices can lead to reduced operational costs, improved resource efficiency, and a diminished carbon footprint, while also fostering a culture of innovation and sustainability among students. Therefore, it is imperative for universities to address these challenges through supportive policies and appropriate infrastructure. Additionally, fostering international collaboration and sharing best practices can enhance the sustainability culture within academic institutions. Ultimately, this study highlights the need for new research avenues to develop innovative models that position universities as leaders in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
