The world today faces many challenges, one of which is environmental issues. Various industries, such as the construction industry, adversely affect the environment. The main factor for this negative impact is the significant amount of carbon emissions in this field, which has caused concerns. Construction activists have become aware of environmental risks and have moved towards using biological components, especially in the materials sector. Plant-based biomaterials are environmentally friendly and significantly reduce carbon emissions. There are diverse plant resources worldwide, with algae being one of the abundant natural resources of interest to experts in this field. This review article examined the applications of algae-based materials in the construction industry and explained the challenges and prospects for researchers. It described the importance and characteristics of algae-based materials and their types and applications. This review article examined the possibility of using and developing these materials by citing case examples and addressing the challenges in this field. There are obstacles to extraction methods, quality control, testing protocols, and regulatory requirements. This paper outlined the prospects for algae-based materials with research on improving properties, developing products based on them about diverse applications, and joint efforts of all stakeholders to achieve a sustainable environment.
