Investigating the relationship between suicide , self - harm , and infidelity in individuals with borderline personality disorder symptoms mediated by attachment styles

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between suicide , self - harm , and marital infidelity in people with borderline personality disorder (BPD) through the mediation of attachment styles . The statistical population included ۳۴۸ patients referred to psychological and psychiatric centers in Zanjan(Year ۲۰۲۴) province with a diagnosis of BPD was selected through purposive sampling . Data were collected using standardized questionnaires including the Borderline Personality Scale (STB) , Beck Suicidality Inventory (BSSI) , Self - Destruction Inventory (NIII - ۱۶) , Marital Infidelity Inventory (ATIS) , and Adult Attachment Styles Inventory (AAT) . Data analysis was performed using multivariate correlation and structural equation modeling (SEM) . Findings showed that insecure attachment style was significantly associated with increased suicidality (β=۰.۵۸) , self - harm (β = ۰.۴۰) , and marital infidelity (β=۰.۵۵) and played an important mediating role in the exacerbation of borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms . In contrast , secure attachment style had a protective effect in reducing these behaviors (β = -۰.۲۸ to -۰.۶۰) . The final model showed that ۴۸ % From Suicide risk , ۵۱ % From Fatty himself and ۵۸ % From Marital infidelity is explained by the independent variable of the study . Also , the path analysis confirmed the indirect effect of insecure attachment on BPD through increased suicidality (β = ۰.۲۵) , self - harm (β = ۰.۳۵) , and infidelity (β = ۰.۲۷) . The results suggest that attachment styles play an important role in the development and maintenance of borderline personality disorder (BPD) . Treatment interventions that focus on modifying insecure attachment patterns and strengthening attachment may help reduce self - destructive behaviors and improve interpersonal functioning in this group .
