High-voltage substations are integral components of power transmission and distribution systems,facilitating the transfer of electricity from generation sources to end consumers. However, extremeweather conditions, including storms, flooding, temperature extremes, and heavy snow, presentsignificant challenges to the safe and efficient operation of these facilities. The impact of severeweather events has become more pronounced with the increasing volatility of climate patterns, leadingto heightened risks of equipment damage, system failures, and prolonged downtime. Managing andmaintaining substations under such conditions is therefore critical to ensure the stability and reliabilityof the electrical grid. This article explores the challenges faced by high-voltage substations in severeweather, focusing on the physical damage to infrastructure, the risks of power interruptions, and theincreased maintenance costs. It also examines the strategies and best practices employed by utilities tomitigate these risks, including resilient infrastructure design, real-time monitoring, predictivemaintenance, and the use of advanced technologies to enhance system reliability. The role of climatechange in exacerbating these challenges is discussed, and the article highlights the importance ofproactive planning and adaptive management in ensuring the continued safe operation of substationsin extreme weather conditions.
