The power industry is increasingly adopting wireless communication technologies such as WiMAX,LTE, and LoRa to enhance the monitoring, control, and automation of high-voltage substations. Thesewireless systems offer numerous advantages, including cost-effective infrastructure, quickdeployment, scalability, and real-time communication, which are essential for modernizing powergrids. However, their implementation is not without challenges. Issues related to cybersecurity risks,interference, signal integrity, and bandwidth limitations must be addressed to ensure the reliable andsecure operation of wireless networks in critical power infrastructure. This paper explores the benefitsand challenges of wireless communication systems in the power industry, focusing on theirapplications in high-voltage substations. It provides an in-depth analysis of WiMAX, LTE, and LoRatechnologies, comparing their features, performance, and suitability for various use cases within thepower sector. Furthermore, the paper discusses mitigation strategies to overcome the challenges andenhance the efficiency and security of wireless communication systems in the energy sector.
