چکیده مقاله:

This research covers the stability of concrete and earth dams with regard to seismic risks. Seismic activity in regions specific to areas where dams are made is so important that seismic activities such as earthquakes happen in this area have the ability to influence the structure of the dams and at some points destroy them. In this respect, knowing the location of the faults is critical in order not to build a dam. For example, San Fernando Dam (USA, ۱۹۷۱) is one of the concrete dams which was destroyed by earthquake, Koynanagar Dam (India, ۱۹۶۷) was the earth dam which collapse in the same way as San Fernando Dam by seismic activity. Geophysical techniques like electrical resistivity, ground-penetrating radar, seismic refraction, and fault detection are indispensable for non-invasive evaluation of subsurface conditions of dams. The above techniques highlight potential structural problems that can affect the safety of dams, namely: seepage and cracks.
