Emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire trucks are involved in many accidents each year. Many of these accidents occur in intersections. We propose a method to improve the safety during rescue missions and pursuits, as well as reducing the travel time of the aforementioned emergency vehicles. We accomplish this by establishing communication between the vehicle and the central traffic control, which can then decide an optimal plan to control the traffic signals at all the intersections that are on the route of the emergency vehicle. We take into account the current location, the destination and route, and the velocity of the emergency vehicle. This information helps us predict the time at which the vehicle will arrive at each intersection. We also propose using the traffic congestion information at the upcoming intersections to clear up traffic prior to the arrival of the vehicle, instead of abruptly switching signals; this can be very helpful in cities with a high level of congestion.
