Utilizing Modular Structures in Architectural Design for Revitalizing Historical Contexts

Designing within historical contexts, particularly in large cities, is a major concern for architects and urban planners. Cities with historical backgrounds present unique and complex challenges for architectural and urban design due to their rich historical heritage and intrinsic character. When we talk about historical textures, we are speaking of a life, a life that does not belong solely to us. Part of it has been carried forward and invested in these contexts by generations over many years. These investments are not merely material or economic; a significant portion is social, which has been able to create the collective memories of the city and give identity to the city and its citizens. If this investment is not valued, the city's identity will be lost, to the extent that it can no longer accumulate any collective memory in the space and pass it on to future generations. By considering characteristics based on users (people), environments (places), and processes (technology), design evaluation can integrate modular structures into the design process. The degree of integration within systemic component units, developed through the evaluation of the 'process,' can adequately address user needs and welfare status. Therefore, this study initially employs a library-based approach to examine theoretical dimensions from a historical perspective and design methods within historical contexts. Based on the solutions proposed in this research, modular design was selected as the method and design process. In the second phase, the theoretical foundations are reviewed, and modular architecture is introduced. The results of this study present the application of modular architectural tools as an efficient architectural solution and process within historical contexts.
