The Importance of Environmental Education in Schools' Design to Sustainability Improvement

Research shows that early childhood education is essential to a child’s future success. Specifically, environmental education beginning during early childhood has several benefits for a child’s development and future. Environmental education connects us to the world around us, teaching us about both natural and built environments. Environmental education raises awareness of issues impacting the environment upon which we all depend, as well as actions we can take to improve and sustain it. The aim of this article is to the importance of environmental education in schools' design to sustainability improvement. Through hands-on experiences and relevant educator pedagogies, children can explore and learn about their local contexts and environmental issues. Positive interactions with nature and the environment teach children about their place in the world, and how they can protect it throughout their lifetimes. Therefore, they can develop the creativity and critical thinking skills to make informed decisions for change, improving the quality of their lives, and those of future generations.
