Improving biogas generation from waste activated sludge anaerobic digestion (WAS-AD) using Nickel nanoparticle (Ni NP) supplementation

Biogas generation from waste activated sludge (WAS) through anaerobic digestion (AD) has gained significant attention due to the increasing demand for sustainable energy. This study investigates the effects of nickel nanoparticles (Ni NPs) on methane production in WAS-AD, aiming to develop a more efficient and profitable method for managing WAS. The results demonstrated that Ni NP supplementation significantly enhanced AD performance. Cumulative methane production increased from ۱۵۲.۳ to ۲۰۵.۶ mL/gVSS—a ۳۵% improvement—with the addition of ۱.۵ mg/L Ni NPs. The supplementation also improved WAS solubilization and hydrolysis under optimal conditions. Additionally, total volatile fatty acid (VFA) levels and system pH were positively affected, contributing to the operational stability of the AD process. Furthermore, adding ۱.۵ mg/L Ni NPs increased total biogas production from ۳۰۶ to ۳۵۳ mL/gVSS by raising methane content from ۴۹% to ۵۸%. Meanwhile, CO₂ and H₂ concentrations decreased from ۴۲% to ۳۴% and ۵% to ۳%, respectively. This study presents a promising and sustainable approach to enhancing WAS-AD for more efficient and economically viable biogas production.
