The relationship between insurance support and awareness, attitude, and self-care behaviors of patients with coronary artery bypass graft surgery: A cross-sectional study

Cardiovascular diseases are among the most costly conditions in healthcare, imposing a significant economic burden on the health system. Universal and supplemental insurance coverage plays a crucial role in accessing medical services. This study investigated the relationship between insurance support and the awareness, attitudes, and self-care behaviors of patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. This cross-sectional study was conducted on ۱۳۸ cardiac patients who underwent CABG surgery using a simple random sampling method in ۲۰۲۱. Data were collected using a standardized questionnaire assessing cardiac patients' awareness, attitudes, and self-care behaviors. A total of ۱۳۸ CABG patients participated in this research. The findings of this study indicated that awareness, attitudes, and self-care performance among cardiac patients were high across all insurance coverage groups. The Kruskal-Wallis test revealed no statistically significant differences between insurance coverage and awareness (P=۰.۹۲۰), attitudes (P=۰.۵۱۰), or daily self-care behaviors (P=۰.۵۴۰). The Mann-Whitney U test found no significant differences between supplementary insurance and attitudes (P=۰.۴۱۰) or self-care behaviors (P=۰.۰۷۰). However, there was a significant difference in awareness (P=۰.۰۲۰), with participants having supplementary insurance demonstrating higher levels of awareness. Patient awareness of their insurance coverage is vital in utilizing healthcare services and achieving satisfaction with treatment in cardiovascular patients. When patients are confident that their treatment costs are covered by insurance, they are more likely to utilize healthcare services without hesitation.
