A Review on Therapeutic Potential of Medicinal Plants in Equine Wound Healing

Wound healing is a complex and dynamic process, orchestrated by a finely tuned sequence of cellular and molecular events that initiate in response to any disruption of tissue integrity. The process of wound healing in horses, particularly in the distal regions of their limbs, often faces complications such as chronic nonhealing wounds and the development of exuberant granulation tissue (EGT). Conventional treatments, including disinfectants and antibiotics, can sometimes hinder the healing process due to their toxicity to essential cells. As a result, there has been growing interest in using medicinal plants for wound healing due to their minimal side effects and therapeutic potential. This review explores the effectiveness of several medicinal plants, including henna, St. John's Wort, Kapok bush, rosemary, chamomile, honey, Aloe vera, and Solenostemma argel, in equine wound healing. Each plant exhibits unique properties, such as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant effects, contributing to improved wound healing outcomes. Despite the promising results, further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms and potential of these herbal treatments in equine medicine.
