Evaluation of Sleep Quality in Epileptic Patients and Factors Affecting It in East Azerbaijan Population

Background: Sleep disturbances are common among epileptic patients and can significantly affect their quality of life. This study aims to evaluate sleep quality in epileptic patients in the East Azerbaijan population and identify factors influencing sleep disturbances.Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving ۲۰۰ epileptic patients from various hospitals in East Azerbaijan. Participants completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess sleep quality. Clinical and demographic data, including seizure frequency, medication type, and comorbid conditions, were collected. Statistical analyses, including correlation and regression, were performed to determine factors affecting sleep quality.Results: The study found that ۶۵% of participants had poor sleep quality, with significant associations between poor sleep and higher seizure frequency, poly-therapy, and comorbid psychiatric conditions. Sleep latency and medication side effects were also notable factors. Table ۱ presents demographic data, Table ۲ indicates seizure frequency and medication details, Table ۳ lists sleep quality scores, and Table ۴ outlines the correlation between various factors and sleep quality. Figure ۱ illustrates the distribution of sleep quality scores among different medication regimens.Conclusion: Epileptic patients in East Azerbaijan frequently experience poor sleep quality. Factors such as seizure frequency, poly-therapy, and psychiatric comorbidities significantly impact sleep. Targeted interventions addressing these factors may improve sleep outcomes in this population.
