The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the built environment has emerged as a pivotal strategy for enhancing sustainability and energy efficiency in residential buildings. This review paper provides a comprehensive examination of the current state of AI-driven smart shading solutions and their potential to revolutionize residential architecture. By analyzing various smart shading technologies, including automated blinds, light shelves, and electrochromic windows, the paper explores their effectiveness in reducing energy consumption and improving occupants’ comfort. The review also highlights case studies that demonstrate the successful implementation of these systems, showcasing their ability to optimize natural light intake and reduce reliance on artificial lighting and air conditioning. Additionally, the paper discusses the challenges and opportunities associated with the adoption of these technologies, such as initial cost, complexity, and user acceptance. The paper concludes with recommendations for future research and policy directions aimed at facilitating the widespread adoption of AI-driven smart shading solutions. These recommendations are designed to support the transition towards a more sustainable and comfortable living environment, ultimately paving the way for the next generation of energy-efficient residential buildings.
